Pure diethanolamine is a white solid at\u00a0<a title=\"Room temperature\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Room_temperature\">room temperature<\/a>, but its tendency to\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hygroscopic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hygroscopic\">absorb water<\/a>\u00a0and to\u00a0<a title=\"Supercooling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supercooling\">supercool<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0mean it is often encountered as a colorless, viscous liquid. Diethanolamine is polyfunctional, being a secondary\u00a0<a title=\"Amine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amine\">amine<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a title=\"Diol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diol\">diol<\/a>. Like other organic amines, diethanolamine acts as a\u00a0<a title=\"Weak base\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weak_base\">weak base<\/a>. Reflecting the hydrophilic character of the secondary amine and hydroxyl groups, DEA is soluble in water. Amides prepared from DEA are often also hydrophilic. It is used to remove\u00a0<a title=\"Hydrogen sulfide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen_sulfide\">hydrogen sulfide<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Carbon dioxide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbon_dioxide\">carbon dioxide<\/a>\u00a0from natural gas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In oil refineries, a DEA in water solution is commonly used to remove\u00a0<a title=\"Hydrogen sulfide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen_sulfide\">hydrogen sulfide<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a title=\"Sour gas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sour_gas\">sour gas<\/a>. It has an advantage over a similar amine\u00a0<a title=\"Ethanolamine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethanolamine\">ethanolamine<\/a>\u00a0in that a higher concentration may be used for the same corrosion potential.
