It is the simplest of the\u00a0aldehydes<\/a>\u00a0(R-CHO). The common name of this substance comes from its similarity and relation to\u00a0formic acid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Formaldehyde is an important precursor to many other materials and chemical compounds. In 1996, the installed capacity for the production of formaldehyde was estimated to be 8.7 million tons per year.<\/sup>\u00a0It is mainly used in the production of industrial\u00a0resins<\/a>, e.g., for\u00a0particle board<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0coatings<\/a>.<\/p>\n
