Unlike the other common ketone solvents,\u00a0acetone<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0MEK<\/a>, MIBK has quite low solubility in water, making it useful for\u00a0liquid-liquid extraction<\/a>. It has a similar\u00a0polarity<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0ethyl acetate<\/a>, but greater stability towards\u00a0aqueous<\/a>\u00a0acid<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0base<\/a>. It can be used to extract gold, silver and other precious metals from\u00a0cyanide<\/a>\u00a0solutions, such as those found at gold mines, to determine the levels of those dissolved metals.\u00a0Diisobutyl ketone<\/a>\u00a0(DIBK), a related lipophilic ketone, is also used for this purpose. Methyl isobutyl ketone is also used as a denaturing agent for\u00a0denatured alcohol<\/a>. When mixed with water or isopropyl alcohol MIBK serves as a\u00a0developer<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0PMMA<\/a>\u00a0electron beam lithography<\/a>\u00a0resist<\/a>. Methyl isobutyl ketone\u00a0(MIBK) is the\u00a0organic compound<\/a>\u00a0with the formula (CH3<\/sub>)2<\/sub>CHCH2<\/sub>C(O)CH3<\/sub>. This colourless liquid, a\u00a0ketone<\/a>, is used as a\u00a0solvent<\/a>\u00a0for gums, resins, paints, varnishes, lacquers, and nitrocellulose.<\/p>\n
