1-Propanol shows the normal reactions of a\u00a0primary alcohol<\/a>. Thus it can be converted to\u00a0alkyl halides<\/a>; for example red\u00a0phosphorus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0iodine<\/a>\u00a0produce\u00a0n-propyl iodide<\/a>\u00a0in 80% yield, while\u00a0PCl3<\/sub><\/a>\u00a0with catalytic\u00a0ZnCl2<\/sub><\/a>\u00a0gives\u00a0n-propyl chloride<\/a>. Reaction with\u00a0acetic acid<\/a>\u00a0in the presence of an\u00a0H2<\/sub>SO4<\/sub><\/a>\u00a0catalyst under\u00a0Fischer esterification<\/a>\u00a0conditions gives propyl acetate, while refluxing propanol overnight with formic acid alone can produce propyl formate in 65% yield. Oxidation of 1-propanol with\u00a0Na2<\/sub>Cr2<\/sub>O7<\/sub><\/a>\u00a0and H2<\/sub>SO4<\/sub>\u00a0gives only a 36% yield of\u00a0propionaldehyde<\/a>, and therefore for this type of reaction higher yielding methods using\u00a0PCC<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0Swern oxidation<\/a>\u00a0are recommended. It is an\u00a0isomer<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a02-propanol<\/a>\u00a0(propan-2-ol, isopropyl alcohol, isopropanol).
